The Jackson Laboratory HLBS Center Deviant Distribution Policy
|
All confirmed deviants will be posted immediately.
All non-HLBS deviants and low priority* HLBS deviants will be available for 60 days on a first come-first serve basis.** The deviant and all of its littermates will be sent.
High priority HLBS deviants *** will be posted immediately and made available subject to completion of heritability testing and establishment of a breeding colony sufficient in size to supply breeding pairs to all interested investigators. This process usually requires a minimum of 6 to 9 months, but may take longer if demand is high. Investigators are urged to alert Karen Svenson (ksven@jax.org) of their interest in any of these deviants as early as possible.
The Policy for Shipping Deviants Follows:
Deviants will first be tested for heritability. This usually takes 90 days after the posting and will result in 1-2 litters. If only one person requests the deviant, that person will receive 1-2 breeding pairs from these litters as long as there are two pairs to develop the colony at TJL. If several people request the deviant, the first litters will be used to establish a colony at TJL, and the offspring of those mice will be used to supply breeding pairs to all labs who request at the same time. This will require an extra generation or another 90 days. At this time, only breeding pairs of mutants will be supplied. If there is high interest in the deviant, at some time, it will be transferred to the main production colony and made available under the same conditions as any other TJL mutant.
Generally, these are HLBS mutants for which symptoms are mild and/or are in a category for which multiple mutants have already been identified and made available.
** Investigators will be charged for shipping costs only.
*** Most extreme or unusual phenotype; mutants with 2 or more affected sibs, demonstrating heritability
We expect to have approximately 5 high priority mutants/phenotype/year
