Visiting Investigators Program for Genomic Applications in Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Disorders Research
On September 30, 2000, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) launched the Programs for Genomic Applications (PGAs). This program is a major initiative to advance functional genomic research related to heart, lung, blood, and sleep health and disorders. The goals of the PGAs include developing information, tools, and resources to link genes to biological function on a genomic scale. All the information, reagents, and tools developed in the PGAs will be freely available in a timely manner to the research community. In addition, the PGAs will provide workshops, courses, and visiting scientist programs to facilitate the training of researchers in the use of the data and related technologies developed by the PGAs.
Since 1929, The Jackson Laboratory (TJL) has provided outside investigators with access to and use of its unique resources. The Visiting Investigators Program for Genomic Applications in Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Disorders Research (VIP) is designed to promote collaboration with outside investigators in the area of heart, lung, blood and sleep research and to enhance the research environment at TJL. Temporary research appointments are available for visiting scientists to conduct collaborative research with Laboratory Staff Scientists or for short-term training. Although appointments are typically one or two months in duration, some may range from one week to more than one year. Each investigator is sponsored by a Research Staff member (listed below) and is expected to conduct research with that sponsor on a collaborative basis. An Application for Visiting Investigator and an Animal Use Summary Form (if applicable) must be completed by prospective visiting investigators.
